Whether you are new to RVs, or you have been using RVs for a while, the sheer number of RVs available can be overwhelming. There are many different types and styles to choose from, and it can be hard to make a choice based on the needs of your family. We’d like to give you a little more detail on two different types of RVs, the gooseneck trailer and the 5th-wheel trailer. That way, you’ll be able to decide which type might be best for your needs.
What’s the Difference Between a 5th Wheel Trailer and a Gooseneck Trailer? The biggest difference between a 5th wheel trailer and a gooseneck trailer comes with the hitch. It’s important to understand the differences, because you may need to choose a trailer based on the size of your truck and the hitch you have on it.
The gooseneck trailer has a coupler that slides onto the ball hitch of your truck. The ball hitch is the standard hitch type you see on many different trucks. The 5th-wheel trailers need a heavy-duty hitch because it has a kingpin that latches onto the hitch. If you tow a lot of equipment, you may have a heavy-duty hitch already. If you do, it makes sense for you to get a 5th-wheel trailer, because you already have the hitch in place. Many people who have heavy-duty or super-duty trucks have a heavy-duty hitch for work. If you have a heavy-duty hitch, it would not make sense to buy an RV that needs a ball hitch.
If you use your truck for travel to work during the week, and you don’t use it as a hauling vehicle, it makes sense to keep the ball hitch and go with the gooseneck trailer. Both gooseneck RVs and 5th-wheel RVs have a lot of options with regard to size and capacity, so you’ll have a lot to choose from no matter which type of RV you pick.
